Hi pals! My name is Lil and I am a BDIC (Bachelor's Degree with Individual Concentration) major here at UMass Amherst. My concentration is in social justice and holistic herbal healing and I'm really interested in the ways that earth-based healing practices and spirituality can be used to disrupt oppressive narratives and systems. I am from Westchester, New York but Western Massachusetts has become my home over the past few years.
Last summer, I worked with my wonderful partner, Brock, to design and implement programming for more than 50 incoming UMass freshmen. It was my first summer in The Valley and the first time I was able to support myself while living separately from my parents. Working with incoming students was incredibly fun and rewarding! For summer 2016, Brock and I have hired 8 more amazing program assistants (PAs) and will be working as Program Coordinators (PCs) to oversee programming and handle big-picture fun. This summer, we are expecting to serve nearly 100 students and I for one am beyond excited!
This summer, I am particularly looking forward to seeing everything bloom (keep an eye out for bushes of purple flowers near the Campus Center!) and trying to get into every body of water I come across. I am looking forward to late breakfast at Cushman's Cafe followed by a lazy Sunday at Puffer's Pond. I am looking forward to getting to know incoming students and sharing my experiences and advice with them. Summer in Amherst is a magical, exciting, and healing and regenerative time for me, so I can't wait to share that with my beautiful co-workers and the inspiring young students (many of them international students) who will continue to shape UMass and the world after myself and my friends have gone.
I'm Reading: Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler, Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer, Joan of Arc: A Life Transfigured by Kathryn Harrison
I'm Watching: It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, The Office, Gossip Girl, Dexter, Every Nature Documentary On Netflix, Secrets of Great British Castles, Louie
I'm Listening To: The Internet, Underachievers, Father John Misty, Hamilton the Musical, Alt J, Life of Pablo, Willow Smith, Phony Ppl
My Favorite Plant: I think a Magnolia tree because they smell sweet and dinosaurs used to eat them!
Fun Fact: I drink 3 cups of medicinal herbal tea every day! Right now I am drinking a blend of skullcap, red clover blossom, mullein, and oat straw
