Hey friends!! My name is Brock and I am one of the two Program Coordinators for Jump! 2016. Last summer, myself and my amazing partner Lily were the only two undergraduate staff members working on the Jump! program, but this year we are beyond excited to continue organizing the program with the help of our 8 new Program Assistants to provide you all with a dynamic, fun summer that grounds you in our community and eases your transition into college life.
I am a double-major in Social Thought and Political Economy (STPEC) and Anthropology, and I am interested in studying popular social movements and community organizing as vehicles for engendering social change. I will be bringing that passion for building community into my work in the Jump! program this summer, and am incredibly excited to meet and get to know the next generation of UMass student leaders! I am from Acushnet, Massachusetts, a small town next to New Bedford, and while I miss the beach more than anything, the many lakes, ponds, and swimming holes of Amherst and the larger Pioneer Valley do a terrific job of filling that void. Seriously - have you ever been to Puffers Pond? If not, this summer in Amherst you are in for a treat.
This summer, I am looking forward to reading (without the stress of class), swimming, hiking, petting dogs (this is really #1 on my list), eating ice cream, befriending cows (these last two can be accomplished in one location, at the amazing Flayvors of Cook Farm, a working dairy farm where they also make and serve their ice cream), and getting to know the many amazing students in the Jump! program! I have (IMO) the best job on campus, as I get to spend my summer coordinating and engaging in the many exciting events we have planned for Jump!, from daytrips to New York City to a survey of local art museums to participating in conversations with dope faculty members to exploring the many trails and swimming holes of Western MA! I hope you will join me on these many adventures this summer!!
Brock's Reading: ok this is hard because I am literally drowning in books BUT Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler (followed by many more of her books), Facing Reality by CLR James and Grace Lee Boggs, Purity by Jonathan Franzen, Dispersing Power by Raul Zibechi, and ZAMI by Audrey Lorde.
Brock's Listening to: In addition to being entirely overwhelmed by The Life of Pablo by Kanye West, Views by Drake, and Lemonade by Beyonce, I am listening to Father John Misty (always), Tame Impala, Alabama Shakes, Willow, Jaden Smith, Dr. Dog, and patiently waiting for the new Vampire Weekend album
Brock's Watching: some nature documentaries, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Office (perpetually), and Jane the Virgin
Brock's Favorite Plant: Wow this is hard OK I drink lots of beautiful herb teas with skullcap and california poppy, but my favorite plant is 100% raspberry bushes
Fun Fact: I never tried a pea until age 18 and it was only under the coercion of my college friends #NEWEXPERIENCES
